Hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone by African artisans, the soapstone hearts are brightly painted and feature the zodiac sign on one side and the zodiac name on the other. A great giftable for a birthday or as keepsake reminder to share the love with your family and friends.

Story Behind the Art:
Each sculpture is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found only in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Laborers works with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chucks, which are then carved into beautiful art.

Nuestra esteatita está tallada por los artistas de SMOLArt, un grupo de artistas que viven en la aldea rural de Tabaka, Kenia, el corazón de la región de tallado de esteatita de Kenia. El nombre, una versión abreviada de Artistas pequeños, medianos y grandes, se refiere al tamaño de los productos de esteatita que fabrican los artesanos, no a su estatura. Fundada en 1990, SMOLArt es miembro de la WFTO y, como tal, garantiza que los artesanos reciban un precio justo por su trabajo. Además, la organización apoya el desarrollo comunitario contribuyendo a proyectos que mejoran las condiciones de vida, la educación y la salud de sus miembros y de la aldea en general.La esteatita se extrae de grandes pozos en los alrededores de Kiisi, Kenia. La esteatita extraída se entrega luego a talladores que tallan esculturas de piedra natural para el mercado mayorista, cuyo color varía del crema al rosa, al marrón, al amarillo, al negro y hasta un veteado de todos ellos. Una vez tallada, los artesanos alisan los bordes ásperos de la esteatita con papel de lija humedecido en agua y pulen la pieza hasta obtener un alto brillo o pintan motivos africanos en colores brillantes con detalles grabados.
